Did a lot of walking while in California and am still paying for it. Walks would range from 1 to 2 hours and be up to 5 miles long. My achilles has been very sore as well as the plantar fascia. In fact, the whole ankle is sore. It got to the point that I would have to take a pain pill in order to do the long walk. I must still be limping a bit as I have developed a pretty bad pain in my lower back. I will be seeing my therapist today and will ask her. I also noticed that on long walks, I can feel the screws in my foot and it's pretty irritating. Thinking that they may need to come out. Very frustrating.
I did fly back yesterday with the compression sock and my foot swelled this time. Must have to do with how upset the ankle is on the day of flying. Had swelling on the medial side as well as lateral. Most of the swelling on the lateral side went away overnight but the medial side is still pretty bad.
I am very encouraged about the distance you are able to walk. Before my surgery, I would swell up and be sore in the ankle after walking 20 minutes.
ReplyDeleteAs hard as this recovery is, be encouraged by the distance you go!!
Good luck with the lower back issue. I am experiencing pain in my hip. I try very hard to walk evenly even though I am pwb with my crutches.
Update, I still feel like I am walking on a grill or rocks. I did call the surgeon's office today so I am anxious to hear their feedback. This is a true test of our patience!!
Good luck with your next travel adventure and keep up that distance walking!!
You are 10 weeks out, right? I would expect the bottom of your foot to improve pretty dramatically soon. I had the same feeling but only in my heel. I spent one afternoon focusing on walking on it and ignoring the rock pain. I think it helped as it was the following week that it went away.
ReplyDeleteAll the walking last week did come with a price. My therapist told me no long walks until next week. Need everything to calm down again. I also told her about this blog so it will be interesting to see if she comments.
Love the blog James! Glad you didn't say anything mean about me. You are doing great despite the many ups and downs, your foot and your back just need a little break.
ReplyDeleteWell good luck with this week of needing to rest your foot.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am 10 weeks out. I have done quite a bit of walking today (in and out of a couple of stores and around the house is quite a bit these days)
My rock feeling is just in my heel also. However, tonight the inside part of my ankle aches. I feel like such a whimp. I always considered myself fairly tough with aches and pains, but this foot is kicking my rear pretty hard.
Jill, this blog has helped quite a few of us that are behind him in surgery. I have tried very hard to keep up, but I have fallen behind him. My surgeon didn't want me to do PT yet. I think I am going to push the issue.
Good luck staying off your foot for a week.
Ok I was 11 weeks on monday, the doc put me back i the boot until August the 24th. When I do my PT is aches in the incision area of my ankle. Do you guys have this. I know if you walk to much the whole ankle gets upset and I takes over a week to feel ok again so dont over due it! I learned the hard way! Also th top of my foot to my toes feels tight and hot??? I dont know why my doc saidI could walk in the boot at 6 weeks?? I hope this is ok!
ReplyDeleteI have a burning pain on the lateral side where the incision for the osteotomy was made. My therapist said it's most likely from the tendons being irritated. I don't really have pain near the other incisions.
ReplyDeleteI had tightness along the entire lateral side of my foot (from heel to toe). In fact, I still have that and do not have complete feeling there yet. I don't have any heat though.
Keep your chin up. There will be ups and downs. Everyone heals at a different pace and you had more/different procedures.
I have a burning feeling off and on on the outside of my foot on about an inch section of the incision. I have put some antibiotic ointment and a bandaid over it and that helps. Regarding the top of my foot, hard to tell because I still have a lot of numbness. My last three toes don't really curl yet, my heel, and the outside of my foot is very numb to the point I really don't feel it when I lay it on the pillow. I called the surgeon this week out of frustration and he said that all the feelings are "normal" and I need to be patient. I go back in two weeks and they hope to see me not using crutches. Let's hope I make it. Right now, it feels like I'm cutting my heel in half if I put too much weight on my foot. I am now 10.5 weeks post op. Oh, and also, was told to keep elevating every chance I can.
ReplyDeleteKeep an eye on that incision. You really don't want to risk an infection. If it gets warm to the touch and especially if you see a red line going up your leg, call your doc immediately and/or go to a med center.
